FILMART and FILM POLSKI present The New York Polish Film Festival, May 5-11, 2005

Honorary Patrons:
The Ministry of Culture,
The Consulate General of the Republic of Poland

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the New York Polish Film Festival in the beautiful month of May!

The Festival begins with an Opening Night Gala on May 5th at the Directors Guild Theatre and continues at the Anthology Film Archives from the 6th to the 11th. For the festival, which may become an annual cultural event in New York City, we are inviting several New York premieres, including new features, co-productions, a retrospective, documentaries and short films by Polish filmmakers and promising film students. Our goal is to present and promote Polish and European Cinema in New York. We are showing more than twenty films!

Opening night at the Directors Guild Theatre will be a Polish nominee celebration. We will present Julia Walking Home (The Healer), directed by Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland, and this year's short-documentary Oscar nominee, The Children of Leningradsky, by Hanna Polak and Andrzej Celinski. Director Hanna Polak is coming from Poland to meet with the press and the audience. We will also show the short film Fallen Art by Oscar nominated director Tomasz Baginski.

NYPFF is very proud to present, for the first time ever in America, a retrospective of the outstanding Polish screen legend, actress Elzbieta Czyzewska. We will show her performing in films directed by such distinguished directors as Andrzej Wajda, Wojciech Has, Jerzy Skolimowski, and Janusz Nasfeter. Ms. Elzbieta Czyzewska, who lives in New York City, will be present in person for this special tribute to her important contribution to Polish culture. Student etudes made with Czyzewska at the Lodz Film School in the early 60’s and never before shown publicly, will be premiered at the festival. For the Closing of the Festival, the film Warsaw, winner of the "Best Movie Award" (2003) at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival, will be presented by its creator, the director Dariusz Gajewski.

Very special thanks to our sponsors and supporters for making this program possible!

I hope you enjoy the New York Polish Film Festival 2005.

Without contribution to this project of dedicated individuals the festival could not take place  and to them we are grateful.
